This week I went somewhere I’ve never been. Given the choice, my hopes and dreams run towards warm weather, comfy beds, short drives, hot sand and beautiful surf. I like pictures of mountains, of course, but find pictures of the ocean much more stirring and satisfying. And this week I found out why. In order to travel from one fantastic client in Colorado to another a few hours away, my route took me through the Rocky Mountains on Trail Ridge Road. As I climbed the elevations and drove the switchbacks, I saw elk and a moose, trees and then clouds… and then I summited the cloud cover and the world, in its valleys and chill opened up at every curve. Awed, eager and somewhat scared (11,000 foot drop just outside my single lane and no guard rail), I stopped a dozen times just to satisfy my thirst for the view. I learned that pictures of mountains had never really moved me because I didn’t have a feeling that connected me to the experience. Now I’m lucky enough to have had it, and I actually feel different. Here’s my question for you: what have you pictured – on a screen or in your mind – and just couldn’t connect to it? Our brains need the tangible and often pictures just aren’t enough. If there is a destination or a goal that you have but you can’t really imagine yourself succeeding, I’d like to encourage you to get out and taste a bit of it. You may have to be creative, you may have to plan a while, but that experience could create a new connection for you. And you deserve it. |
