Terrible Two’s

little boy cryingAre the terrible two’s a reality?

For many families they are! For some it happens a little later, especially with first kids. Some families escape this entirely – but that is rare. What is “this?” The sudden change in a child’s behavior leading to tantrums, and other unhappiness (for the parents and the kiddo!).

Why is my child having a tantrum?

Suddenly a child realizes that what he wants and what he can accomplish are not in sync! She sees an older sibling talking and moving and reaching and doing, and is frustrated that her skills aren’t there yet. He has lots to say to you but you can’t understand him!

What will make the tantrums stop?

Please check out the interview I did on EverydayFamily Terrible Two’s: Myth or Reality? with Alison Lee – we talked about tantrums, whining, sharing and biting – and how to navigate it all with your preschooler!

Did your little one have an age when you thought “Wait, what is happening?!”

  1. We skated by the TT’s with our first son. Our second? Ugh. He’s nearly three and his tantrums are less frequent and not nearly as long – or scary. They still occur. It’s so hard as a parent to take action during these meltdowns. Every one seems to have different advice to share, and everything you try simply fails. Good to know we’re not alone … that does help! My main goal is to not encourage bad behavior by giving in to the child’s every whim, all the while being as calm as humanly possible. Who needs synchronized meltdowns?

    1. Agreed, Christian. Kids are as individual as… whirling dervishes! Staying constant and calm is the best thing we can do for two year old meltdowns – or 14 year old tantrums either.
