Are you frustrated with something a work? Choose.
Are you hurt by something someone is doing to you? Choose.
Are you buried in financial pressures? Choose.
Are you struggling with a bad diagnosis?
Choose.
Recently, a patient said to me “I’ve been watching all your videos on resilience. What does it really mean? What am I supposed to do?”
I wanted to be able to offer an elegant, articulate and beautifully inspirational response. I think I even tried. But what came out was this one word. “Choose.”
Every time we face a hardship or change or stressor and we don’t die, we have choices. My mom of blessed memory used to say “If you’re still breathing, you have choices. You may not like any of them, but you still have to pick one.’
And that’s the thing to remember about struggle and suffering. We often can’t choose what happens to us. But we always choose how we respond. Even not making a conscious decision is a choice. So if we want to be happy or content, to move forward toward the life we want, we have to make choices in that direction.
What are you choosing right now?
All my best,
Dr. G
