Teens are not safe online.
Kids are online. Tweens and teens are online. Adults are online. Unless you’re Amish, this is an issue to be faced – and embraced. As the parenting expert on public television’s series iQ:smartparent I had the opportunity to talk to teens and hear their own words about what is great and what is awful about online life for teens. And safety issues? Well, teenagers are notorious for assuming they’re immune to danger – technology doesn’t change that!
Teens can use technology for good.
Every platform that can be used to cyber-bully can be used to “cyber-empower” as well. Awareness can be raised, people can be helped. Bullying can end. According to teens, this must happen and it can happen. They have advice about how it will happen.
Parents make a big difference.
The teens I spoke to said that adults can change how kids behave. The TEENS said that! So come on over to Huffington Post and see – in their own words – what the teenagers recommend parents do about online safety, and how, to teach them what they need to know. And how they can teach us what we need to know.
