Hey, parents! Have you heard of:
- The Cinnamon Challenge
- Salt and Ice
- Blue Whale
If you haven’t, you may want to do a quick google search. As a mom, I know how hard it can be to keep up with all of the latest trends and challenges for kids and teens on social media. You may think that you have it all under control and then someone tells you about a new game or trend, and it’s time to start all over again!
The fact is it’s going to be impossible to know about every trend coming down the road before your kids do. So the goal as parents should be to trend-proof your kids.
Where can we learn about these trends that are coming across your kids social media feeds?
I’ll give you a hint….
They are the experts on social media after all. Let them be your guide to navigating these trends and respect them as experts. Ask them questions about things you may not be sure about. Here are some conversation starters.
“I’ve heard about the blue whale game, what is it?”
“Have you seen the cinnamon challenge? Why do people do it?”
If they know what it is, further the conversation. If they don’t you may want to look at it. After you both understand what it is, some next conversations could be:
“What’s the advantage of playing that?”
“What are some disadvantages of playing that?”
If you ask in a non-judgemental way, your kids will be more likely to open up and tell you what they REALLY think and then you can figure the best way to guide them.
